Stow on the Wold is a wonderful small market townsteeped in history, having been very much part of The EnglishCivil war. There are many narrow stone alleyways, which weretraditionally used for herding and counting sheep on theirway to market, lined with some of the oldest buildings in the town. The Market Square is at the heart of the town, complete withthe Market Cross, which served as a reminder to traders totrade fairly under the sight of God. Stow boasts The PorchHouse, dating back to 947AD, which is listed in The GuinnessBook of Records as England's oldest Inn. The Porch House hasrecently undergone extensive renovations from itspredecessor, The Royalist Hotel and is now under newmanagement. Well worth a visit if it's reviews are anythingto go by.If, like me you enjoy a cream tea or two where better to gothan Stow where you can enjoy a Cotswold cream tea at its best in one of its delightful tea rooms. Alternatively, youcould stock up on local specialities such as Donnington trout,at the Farmers Market held on the second Thursday of everymonth in the Square. Stow-on-the-Wold makes an excellent base for trips to Bourton-on-the-Water, The Slaughters, Burford, Broadway andChipping Campden - all incredibly picturesque with chocolatebox cottages and honey-coloured stone buildings. Garden lovers and budding historians will love ChastletonHouse, one of the finest and most complete Jacobean houses inEngland just a short drive from Stow. Different to most historichouses open to the public in that it has not been restored butrather preserved just as it was.
